Amish are members of a Christian group in North America that originated in the late 17th century. They distinguish  themselves through their appearance and dress. Men wear full beards and no mustaches. women wear long dresses and always wear aprons and a prayer cap. There are several different varieties from ultra conservative to moderate in regards to modern technology so not all use only horses and buggies and have no electricity.  But a foundation of all groups’ faith is hard work,  self-reliance,and a strong sense of community.

Although their dress and their shunning of technology has often made them objects of ridicule like similar groups like the Mennonites and Hutterites, their embracing of respect for the land and community and self-reliance makes them worth respecting by anyone striving to develop resilient communities.  In full disclosure, I’ve never visited an Amish community but I have been associated with a Hutterite colony in Montana.

The Amish are considered excellent farmers, growing and storing the majority of their food and purchasing in stores only staples such as flour and sugar.

They are known for combining staples that should be found in any pantry in creative and innovative ways. The cheeses, jams, and baked goods.they produce and market at  Farmer’ Markets, in small stores and mail order are famous and go along ways to supporting their communities..

The Amish Christmas Jam is one example of their pragmatic creativity. The recipe we are sharing is an adaptation that uses Pomona’s Universal Pectin allowing us to use less sugar.

To learn more practical and tasty recipes we have shared a few links to recipes and tips online and a great cook book.
